Izumo Taisha, located in Shimane Prefecture, is one of the oldest Shinto shrines dedicated to Okuninushi-no-mikoto. It is famous as a “marriage shrine” and many people from all over Japan come to worship. And it is well known for its huge Shinto shimenawa rope. It separates a holy place from other unclean places and is considered a barrier against evil spirits.
It is said that the origin of shimenawa is Amaterasu Omikami myth. A long time ago, when hiding Amaterasu Omikami was removed from the cave, one of the gods strung a shimenawa across the cave entrance to prevent the cave being entered again.
From this episode, a shimenawa is used as “a sign to protect God’s territory.”
