Located on the east side of Lake Biwa in Shiga Prefecture, Hikone Castle is a well-preserved example of early 17th century castles of Japan. Naotsugu Ii began to construct the castle, and received the cooperation of the Tokugawa Shogunate and his fellow lords. The project took 20 years to complete. The three-storied donjon, with its black roof tiles, white walls and gold ornaments, is one of – the four surviving castle towers which are designated as a National Treasure.
